What a lovely experience! My parents were a massive fan of the owner’s previous hunan restaurant in Kensington and was very excited to find out (albeit a few years later) that they had reopened in such a lovely venue. I love the beautiful … More

Finally got to try this place after getting a number of recommendations to go here.
Food
The food we ordered was pretty delicious. The Chairman Mao Braised Pork was nicely cooked and despite sitting in a bowl of oil didn’t taste too oily. The pork had a nice caramelised soya sauce flavour.
Straw mushrooms and celery were nice and has a very fragrant ginger flavour.
Pre-baked small fish and shrimp was probably the most disappointing dish of the night. Not because it wasn’t delicious but just cause of what we expected to get. What we got was these tiny dry fish stir fried with shrimps in chilies. Word of warning, this dish is still quite spicy even though we asked for medium.
The Hunan fried rice was delicious but I couldn’t really tell what made made it Hunan style.
They also give you a nice pickled cabbage appetiser.
Ambience
I like the orange coloured walls and pop art around the restaurant.
Service
Service was very good and attentive. The waitresses were almost too eager to help out.
Price
Three people for dinner including BYOW charge and 1% credit card surcharge came out to around $100 so pretty standard night out in Sydney.
Overall
Really liked this place and would come back again.

The food is so delicious. Spicy oily goodness. My favourite Chinese Hunan restaurant in Sydney. Steamed pork belly with preserved vegetables is pure happiness in a bowl. Highly highly recommend this place. I get serious cravings when haven’t been in a while.

Great Chinese restaurant. Food is slightly unusual and not the typical that you can get in other Chinese restaurant. Food was delicious, especially their lamb and their fried rice. The place is clean and spacious and can accommodate a lot of people. More

Experience the true mastery of Chinese hospitality
真有国内的感觉
Beautiful fit out and an impressive menu with several specialities of Xiang Cuisine. The braised pork is a must try, the serving size was generous indeed, with three adults we still had leftovers. The sauce was delicate and subtly flavoured with traditional aromatics.
I also particularly liked the smoked pork fried rice. It was unlike any other kitchen in Sydney. Additional recommendations are the pickled vegetable, to cut through the richness of the meat, and the steamed fish with pickled green chilli. This was such a comforting flavour.
They have an extensive wine list, and a variety of high quality Chinese tea. We couldn't pass up the tangyuan (sweet rice ball) for dessert.
Also enjoyed the decor, a few nods to famous Hunan figures, and lovely high quality furniture transports you to a traditional Chinese setting. The couple running the restaurant were welcoming, generous and caring, they treated us like old friends even though it was our first visit.
Chef has unparalleled skill.

Extremely delicious and authentic Hunanese food - the spice was just what my partner and I needed to warm us up on a rainy evening. We loved everything from start to finish, but the steamed barramundi with soft tofu (extra spicy, of course) was a particular favourite of mine. We can't wait to return for more! More

Aesthetically this restaurant looks fabulous, heavy wooden chairs, beautiful Asian inspired decor, you are expecting the food will be just as amazing. Unfortunately not, with very mixed thoughts around the table. The pepper chilli king prawns were good as was the chicken with tea tree mushrooms which was my favourite but the signature braised pork was overly fatty and the Huan style fried rice I really didn’t enjoy, it was too smoky in flavour. The dumplings which came at the end of the meal had hardly any flavour at all and would give them a miss. They do sell wine, but no spirits which I found very odd. The service was ok, but not overly welcoming. There is something just not right and even though we didn’t hate the meal, we won’t be rushing back.

I have always been a fan of this restaurant, but I haven't eaten there since my boss moved to the city. I went to the botany store the day before and found that the taste was slightly different, so I decided to go to the city store the next day to satisfy my craving.
I've been there when it was still Madame Shanghai. I really like its Chinese-style decoration and the tableware is also very beautiful. It feels very suitable for colleagues' gatherings or company gatherings.
Recommended dishes:
1⃣️ Example soup: Cuttlefish stewed with pork ribs
Oh my god, the first sip tastes exactly like the soup my mom used to make when I was a child. The soup is rich but not greasy, and the ribs are fat but not greasy. It is really great!
2⃣️ Braised pork
Their braised pork has always been one of my favorites! But nowadays, braised pork does not contain fried tofu, and the meat pieces have become bigger. The pork belly has five layers with distinct layers. It melts in your mouth when you bite it and is full of flavor! Great love!
3⃣️Spicy beef tripe
Sorry, it’s one of my favorites too! The boss lady improved it by changing the white beef tripe into braised beef tripe, which makes it more flavorful when fried. It still has the same flavor!
4⃣️ Pork belly wrapped in meat
To be honest, I haven't eaten this dish in Changsha. As an appetizer, it's really good. The combination of pork belly and meat is perfect.
5⃣️ Stir-fried pork with peas
I love to eat their smoked bamboo shoots, bacon with dried radish, fried pork with turnips, and all the dry rice dishes. They are no different from the ones my grandma used to dry in Changsha!
6⃣️ Steamed preserved meat
I have been eating his bacon for many years. I have also bought it from other places but I always felt that the taste was lacking. The bacon was a little salty, but the bacon was amazing!

Authentic Chinese Cruise Dining Experience – Surprisingly Impressive!
We stopped in for lunch and were genuinely impressed from start to finish. The first clue that this place knows what it's doing? A one-page menu. A short, focused menu is always a sign the kitchen has mastered their craft and that was absolutely the case here.
Most of the dishes are pork or beef based, which might feel limiting if you don’t eat red meat (like me), but I was happy to find a vegetarian and a seafood option as well. The flavors were spot on the pepper garlic dish in particular was absolutely delicious. And the jasmine rice we ordered four cups and were surprised at how generous the portion was!
If you're not confident using chopsticks, don’t worry they’re happy to provide a fork and spoon. Service was fast, friendly, and efficient. Our food came out quickly and piping hot.
I’ll admit, I walked in with a bit of doubt, but left completely satisfied both with the meal and the overall experience. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a well executed, authentic Chinese meal with great service.

From the first bite you understand why this is (in my view) the most authentic Hunan-style Chinese restaurant in Sydney, if not all of Australia. The balance of heat, smoke, sourness, and subtle sweetness is just right !
